A day in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Although the fall weather in Alberta has been fabulous, the air is getting colder, so it's time to travel to a warmer destination. It's off to Israel we go.

Our flight path to Israel took us through Amsterdam. Since we had an 11 hour lay over here we locked up our luggage in the airport and took a train to central Amsterdam.

What a lovely historical city. I really had no idea just how much water there really is here. You can see from the screen shot of Google maps at the end of this post, just how many canals there are.

We walked around the city all day and marveled at the architecture. The dates on the buildings go back 300 years and remarkably are still standing. Walking through the old city centre is a lesson to Dutch architecture with so many skinny buildings lining the streets displaying a vast variety of roof lines and facades.

It is amazing that these buildings are still standing. You can visually see how some buildings are shifting, twisting and tilting in various directions yet still stand. For the photographer who insists on making sure the perspective and lines in their photos are perfect this place could be a challenge.

We also found ourselves in the red-light district. Well, truth be told, Norm used Google maps to accidentally find it. It is unique, to say the least.
