Belgrade to Sarajevo

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a compact city on the Miljacka River, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps.

Not only did we change countries,  but the topography also changed significantly, as we wound our way through the beautiful Alpine countryside.

Sarajevo has always been a very culturally mixed city. Within a very short walking distance, you find Orthodox and Catholic churches, synagogues and mosques.

A City where East meets West.
There is a marked border in the pedestrian street of the Old City, where it transitions into the modern area.  It symbolizes the joining of the two main historical periods that moulded the city, the Ottoman and the Austro-Hungarian. You can see and feel the difference between the two areas.

In the afternoon, we had a walking tour around Sarajevo which was a lovely and educational experience.   Most educational as we visited the site where Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie were assassinated on 28 June 1914. This event eventually led to the outbreak of the First World War.
We stood where the assassin stood with a replica of the couple's car parked nearby.

After dinner with our group we toured the city some more then called it  a night.
