Uganda 🇺🇬 Africa
The time has come to check more boxes off the bucket list with a trip to Uganda, Africa.
After a gruelling couple days of travel and a thorough search of me and my bags, as I apparently tested positive for something in a random swab, we finally arrived in Entebbe, Uganda. We are here thanks to Kelly, a lovely lady we met in the Amazon in Ecuador. Kelly runs her own business, Adventurelust.Travel. She told us about her trip to Uganda to see the Silver Back Gorillas, and we said if you ever go back, we are in. So here we are, excited about the safaris and trekking we will experience, especially the gorilla trekking.
Today was our first day out with a group of fellow travellers Kelly has gathered together.
We arrived at our hotel at 3:30 am only to have to wake up at 6 am. to hop into our jeep for a 4-plus hour ride to visit with some White Rhinos.
Here is a rhino fun fact. Compared to black rhinos, white rhinos have a longer skull, less sharply featured forehead and a more pronounced shoulder hump, with almost no hair and two horns. The Afrikaans word “weit” means wide and refers to the rhino's muzzle. The Early English settlers, however, misinterpreted the “wyd” for “white," so they became white rhinos even though they are not white.
Although I lacked sleep, I stayed awake during the long ride as there was just so much to see. It's an interesting and busy place with people everywhere. I wanted to take it all in.
At the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, we walked through the Savannah grasslands and saw a mother and her four-month-old baby, as well as two males. So adorable. Uganda has worked hard to bring back the rhino population and is having great success.
We then travelled onward to the top of Murchison Falls. Murchison Falls is best known for being the most powerful in the world. This is where the Nile squeezes through an 8m wide gorge and plunges into the “Devil’s Cauldron,” creating a beautiful bright rainbow. The spray from the falls cooled us off along the way.
On the drive back, we drove through the game park to our hotel and saw some of Africa's wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, and lions. It’s been a wonderful day to start our newest adventure.
