Materuni Waterfall Splendor
Today we drove through some spectacular landscapes to the Materuni Waterfall in the Mware River. It's found in the beautiful village of Materuni on the edge of the Kilimanjaro mountain reserve. The eight-kilometre walk throughout the hike and 300 meters of incline, was an excellent warm-up for our legs.
This village is so enchanting that it seemed to be a little piece of paradise in the African jungle. Bursting with succulent fruits, exotic plants, and animals that seem to have the ability to heal both body and soul. The villagers really seem to live in harmony with nature here.
The Materuni waterfall is a cascade of crystal-clear glacier water, falling 80 meters into its basin, and is absolutely stunning.
After our hike, we stopped at a small local coffee planation to make our own coffee right from the bean, to removing the husk, grinding it, to finally drinking it. We purchased some coffee and art work and ventured back to the lodge where we met the rest if our hiking group and had our orientation meeting.
We were reminded that even though we are Canadians used to the cold this was still going to be tough at the top, because at home we don't hike for 17 hours in windy -20 c weather with oxygen levels reduced by 40%. I can hardly wait. 😫
