Moshi, Tanzania
Africa keeps calling.
We are waking up to our first day in Tanzania. We arrived last night after long but smooth flights.
We met up with Kristine at the Amsterdam Airport. We met Kristine during our trip to Egypt, and now the three of us are tackling Mount Kilimanjaro together.
We are staying at the Stella Maris Lodge near Moshi and booked a driver and guide to tour us around.
Moshi is the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro: and serves as the starting point for most climbers. The town is situated at the base of the mountain and is the primary access point for treks up the mountain.
Walking around the heart of Moshi is an authentic cultural experience: it's home to the Chagga people, an ethnic group native to the Kilimanjaro region. The Chagga people are very friendly, and we learned about their traditions, music, and cuisine just by walking around their busy streets and local markets.
Moshi has vibrant local markets where we experience the hustle and bustle of daily life. We tried to learn Swahili, the official language of Tanzania, alongside English and found the locals very friendly towards us and our efforts to speak to them in Swahili.
It was a lovely day walking around the city, which ended with meeting some more people joining our group and enjoying a great meal back at Stella Maris.
Tomorrow we hike up to a waterfall.
