Our search for African wildlife begins.

As we fly via helicopters to Amber River Camp, we see elephants, hippos and alligators below. The anticipation of what we will see over the next few days begins to build.

Upon arrival at camp, the staff great us by singing a welcome song. Amber River Camp is a small un-gated camp that is only a year old in the Okavango Delta, north of Maun . Un-gated means it is void of a fence, and the animals are free to roam. The entire camp is built to be moved out at any time, so it is made with wood, canvas, and solar power.

After a tour of our tented cabins, which are beyond excellent, we enjoy some high tea and then head out for our first safari.

What a fabulous late afternoon observing various birds, impalas, wort hogs, elephants and more. The scenery is stunning and diverse, from low grasses to tall trees and shrubs and spotted with massive termite hills.

Our evening was the most memorable. We relaxed and watched the vibrant sunset near a water pond. We started to hear the roar of a lion. What a deep, prominent sound of strength that carries in the air forever. Both Supa and Jaco tell us the male lion is gathering his pride for the night.

They also feel he is close enough to perhaps find him, so we pack up our drinks and snacks and head in the direction of his calls.

We would drive a ways, turn off the jeep, and listen to get his bearings and carry on. Each time we turned the truck and lights off, it was a sureal feeling to be in the African wilderness, in the pitch dark, knowing whats out there, and hearing the roar of a lion.

Not only did our guides find him, but also 2 females walking with him. We followed behind for a ways, watching and listening until they layed down to rest and wait for the others.

Amazingly, as long as we remain in the jeep our presence didn't bother them.

What a spectacular experience for our first day here.
