Beyond the Meerkats
Makgadikgadi National Park
Salt Flats and Afternoon Quading
After hanging out with the meerkats we drove to the salt flats. These flats are in the Makgadikgadi National Park. They are either dry, mostly dry, or flooded. We are here while it's mostly dry and had fun taking pictures.
After lunch we hopped onto quads for a trip to learn about the unique Boabab trees.
These members of the cactus family have very large trunks that become hollow as they age. We listened to the story of a young man who climbed up and into one, only to find himself battling a leopard who was resting inside. His friend was able to help get him out of the tree, so he survived.
Immediately after hearing this story Klyer climbs up a boabab tree with no branches to step on, to see what's inside this one. While filming the inside of the tree a beautiful giant white barn owl came flying out, leaving its mark on Kyler's shoulder. They do say it's lucky to have a bird poop on you.
We then rode our quads to a natural watering hole used by livestock and wildlife, where we stopped for sundowner drinks, snacks and to watch the brightly coloured sunset.
When the time came to leave, Kyler and Kaylea had to use a quad to push-start Norm on his quad in the dark. They got it going, and we returned to our huts to wrap up a fabulous first day.
May 23, day 2 in Batswana
A visit to Gweta
On this day, we spent the morning touring the local town of Gweta, home town to our tour guide Kim.
After our town tour, we had lunch with a traditional farm family, where I tried some boiled, salted mopane worm (a very colourful caterpillar). High protein or not, it's not my jam. We then enjoyed some downtime around the pool for the balance of the day. Over all a nice informative and relaxing day
